Day 1 — Arrive Nairobi to Amboseli

On arrival, you’re met by your guide and driven south toward Amboseli — one of Kenya’s smaller parks, but among its most rewarding. Amboseli is where the world’s first long-term elephant studies took place, and much of what’s known today about elephant behavior — including how they grieve and celebrate as families — was discovered here. Lunch is taken en route or on arrival at your lodge, and by afternoon you’re already out on your first game drive. Elephants are close to guaranteed; keep an eye out too for hyena, zebra, and wildebeest, with a chance at one of the big cats. Dinner and a night’s sleep follow, with Africa’s sounds drifting in through the canvas.

Day 2 — Full Day, Amboseli

A full day on safari, with the open plains and dry climate here making wildlife easy to find and easier still to photograph — including the classic shot every safari traveler comes for: elephants crossing the savannah with Kilimanjaro and acacia trees framing the background.

Day 3 — Amboseli to Tarangire, Crossing into Tanzania

An early start for the roughly 90-minute drive to the Namanga border crossing, where your guide handles every formality — you simply step through. Your Tanzanian guide is waiting on the other side, and the journey continues via Arusha into Tarangire National Park.

Where Amboseli is defined by acacia and elephant, Tarangire is defined by elephant and the ancient, towering baobab. Wildebeest and zebra move in large numbers here too, alongside kudu, impala, and gazelle — prey enough to draw lion, leopard, and hyena, with an outside chance of wild dog. The park’s river keeps wildlife close year-round, and with far fewer visitors than better-known parks, the game viewing here feels distinctly your own. The night is spent at a lodge just outside the park.

Day 4 — Onward via Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

Standing at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater is difficult to describe as anything but cinematic. Formed when a volcano collapsed some 2–3 million years ago, the crater floor spans 260 square kilometres and drops 600 metres below the rim — nutrient-rich volcanic soil drawing an estimated 30,000-plus resident animals, including the black rhino, protected here by armed rangers. (The one animal that never appears: giraffe, whose legs simply can’t manage the crater walls.) Lion prides, wildebeest, elephant, buffalo, and prolific birdlife fill the crater floor below.

By afternoon, you leave the crater for the Serengeti, the landscape flattening as you go — zebra and giraffe scattered across it, small Maasai villages passing by the roadside, occasionally pausing the vehicle for a herd crossing the road. Cross into the Serengeti itself and the Maasai villages give way entirely to wildlife: wildebeest and zebra as far as the horizon, and the kori bustard, Africa’s largest flying bird, often trailing the herds for the insects they stir up. The night is spent in the heart of the Serengeti plain.

Day 5 — Full Day, Serengeti

A full day tracking the Big Five across one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth — an experience that tends to leave people quieter than they expect. Outside the dry season, expect Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, topi, eland, warthog, and a wide range of birdlife alongside the animals already seen, plus the near-certainty of hippo pools, heard and smelled before they’re seen. The next two nights are spent at a tented camp just outside the Serengeti’s northwestern boundary, with a view over the plain that the park proper can’t offer.

Day 6 — Walking Safari & Evening Game Drive

Today makes full use of being just outside the park boundary, where activities unavailable inside the reserve become possible. A guided walking safari, accompanied by an armed ranger and your guide, brings you eye-level with a landscape you’ve only seen from the vehicle so far — gazelle, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, and occasionally lion, all encountered on foot, where you are decidedly not in charge.

In the evening, an equally rare experience: a night game drive. Much of the savannah’s wildlife is most active after dark, when the heat breaks and herbivores move to graze — and the predators know it too. Sitting in the dark, senses sharpened, listening to the bush wake up around you, is a different kind of safari entirely — one we’d encourage you not to skip.

Day 7 — Serengeti to Masai Mara, Crossing back into Kenya

North from camp toward the Sirari/Isibania border, where your Kenyan guide is waiting to take over for the remainder of the journey. From the border, it’s on to the Masai Mara for the next stretch of the trip.

Day 8 — Full Day, Masai Mara

Yesterday, Serengeti. Today, its Kenyan counterpart — technically the same ecosystem, though the Mara’s smaller size often means a higher concentration of wildlife per square kilometre. Expect large herds of elephant, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, giraffe, and gazelle, trailed by the lion, hyena, leopard, and cheetah that hunt them. Travel between July and October, and you may witness a portion of the Great Migration itself — over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra crossing the Mara River, not without risk from the crocodiles waiting below.

Day 9 — Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

A final farewell to the Mara’s open plains, driving through Maasai country past the extinct volcano Mount Longonot en route to Lake Naivasha — a freshwater lake at the highest point of the Great Rift Valley, 1,890 metres above sea level, known for hippo, giraffe, waterbuck, vervet monkey, and prolific birdlife.

The afternoon is yours: a swim, a walk through the lodge gardens where antelope and giraffe often wander through, or — for those wanting to move after days in the vehicle — a guided bike ride through nearby Hell’s Gate National Park, a landscape unlike anything else on this trip and well worth the detour.

Day 10 — Lake Naivasha to Nairobi, Departure

The morning opens with a boat trip on the lake, watching for hippo and the area’s many bird species from the water. From there, it’s on to Nairobi and the airport, where your journey home begins — or, if you’d rather not go home just yet, where a coastal retreat in Mombasa, Zanzibar, or Mauritius can begin instead.
