An early start for a briefing at park headquarters before the trek begins — through bamboo forest and into the mountain wilderness, anywhere from two to five hours depending on where the troop is found that day. Once located, you have one precious hour with the gorillas: time for photographs, for learning their behavior from your guide, and simply for watching them interact before the trek back down.

A different forest, a different rhythm. This morning’s trek follows a troop of golden monkeys — around 80 members strong, living on the lower slopes and considerably easier to reach than yesterday’s gorillas. They’re lively and endlessly entertaining, leaping through the bamboo canopy overhead. The afternoon is yours, either to relax at the lodge or explore further with your guide.
