Where misty peaks shelter Africa's last mountain gorillas

Volcanoes National Park rises from Rwanda's northern border in a chain of dormant volcanoes, their slopes cloaked in bamboo forest and mist. This is the setting that inspired Gorillas in the Mist — and remains one of only three countries on Earth where mountain gorillas survive in the wild.

Rwanda offers the world's most refined gorilla trekking experience — shorter approach hikes than neighboring Uganda, smaller group sizes, and a conservation model that has helped the mountain gorilla population steadily recover. An hour spent with a habituated family here is unforgettable in its intimacy.

Kigali serves as your gateway — one of Africa's cleanest, most orderly capitals — before the terraced green hills that give Rwanda its name unfold on the drive north toward the volcanoes.
Trek through Volcanoes National Park's bamboo forest to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family, guided by trackers who know each family's movements intimately. Rwanda's shorter treks make this one of the most accessible gorilla encounters in East Africa.
Track playful golden monkeys through the same volcanic forest, a lighter, faster-paced complement often paired with gorilla trekking on the same trip.
Hike to the grave site of Dian Fossey, the primatologist whose work brought global attention to mountain gorilla conservation, or visit Kigali's museum dedicated to her legacy.
Spend time in Kigali before or after your trek — a city defined by its cleanliness, hills, and a sobering, essential visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
Permits should be secured 4–6 months in advance; treks in Rwanda are often shorter than in Uganda, though terrain and duration still vary by gorilla family location.
Fitness for Trekking
Trekking involves uneven volcanic terrain at altitude; a moderate level of fitness is recommended, and porters are available to assist.
What to Pack
Waterproof hiking boots, gardening gloves, long sleeves and trousers, and rain gear year-round.
Visas & Entry
Most nationalities can obtain an e-visa in advance; the East Africa Tourist Visa may also cover Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya on one trip.
Health & Safety
Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry; malaria prophylaxis is advised for lower-altitude regions.
